About the Event

Fogo Island Arts invites you to visit Long Studio for a short talk by artist-in-residence, and recipient of our inaugural juried Newfoundland and Labrador Artist Residency, Ashley Hemmings. While in residence, Ashley has been working on an 8x8 quilted house, Nan’s Cabin, based on their grandmother’s home that was torn down in 2012. See this piece, among others, and learn about Ashley’s practice. Games and tea will follow the talk.

Ashley Hemmings is a visual artist. They completed their BFA in Visual Arts at Memorial University of Newfoundland in 2018, and an MFA in Visual Arts at the University of Windsor in 2021. Using play and humour, Ashley’s practice combines locally rooted craft processes with other media such as video, installation, writing, and collecting to consider craft in the context of environmental anxiety, community, and queerness. In 2024, Ashley was the inaugural winner of the Excellence in Fine Craft Award from VANL-CARFAC.

This new residency is generously supported by anonymous donors.

Long Studio is located along Joe Batt's Point Trail and can be accessed by parking at the trail head.
